PURPOSE OF POSITION: 

The NP/PA will be responsible for providing services that include assessing, diagnosing, prescribing, treating, and patient/family education.

 

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Under the general direction of the collaborating /supervising medical oncologist, elicits the history of the present illness, performs physical examination, assess family and social history, orders appropriate diagnostic studies and provides treatment of acute problems for medical

oncology patients. 

 

2. Provides follow-up care for specific oncology patients including prescriptions for medication, blood products, routine diagnostics and follow-up studies and therapeutic measures in accordance with written practice guidelines.  The NP/PA will write prescriptions as permitted by

state regulations and his/her license. 

 

3. Relays appropriate clinical information regarding patient care to the collaborating/supervising physician and referring physicians.

 

4.  Interacts with interdisciplinary staff and external resources for optimal patient care.

 

5.  Implements treatment plan by prescribing/dispensing medications and/or injections in compliance with medical practice guidelines and state laws.

 

6.  Participates in peer review, chart review, staff education, clinical guideline development, and other continuing education and quality assurance activities to demonstrate compliance with standards, regulations, policies, and procedures.

7. Dictates a medical evaluation report and completes necessary documentation in the medical record.  Completes billing in a timely manner.

 

8.  Performs all responsibilities/ duties required by the position, department and hospital as described in the scope of service, to assure that the unique nature (of the patient served is addressed.   Assesses patient and family education and psychosocial needs and implements plan to address these. 

 

9. In collaboration with oncology team, maintains and develops policies and procedures and standards of care.  Evaluates the quality of care provided and recommends changes for improvement.

 

10. Maintains current knowledge of healthcare practices by participating in educational offerings and professional organizations.  Makes a significant and sustained contribution to the nursing profession.  Demonstrates professionalism and accountability.

 

11. Determines eligibility of patients for entry into clinical trials.  Applies current concepts and findings from research or studies to practice.

 

12. Perform other work related duties as requested/directed.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:

·        Master's Degree.  At least 1 year experience as NP/PA.

·        License to practice as a registered nurse in Massachusetts and certified by the Massachusetts Board of Registration as a Nurse Practitioner or license to practice as a Physician Assistant  

·        If qualified as a NP, Certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses

Credentialing Center or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.   

·        United States Department of Justice DEA Registration Commonwealth of Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration. 

·        Oncology Certified Nurse recommended, Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse

Preferred.

·        Current Basic Life Support Certification.

·        US Department of Justice and Massachusetts' Controlled Substance DEA Registrations are required for prescribing practitioners.

·        Masters prepared Nurse Practitioner OR Licensed Physician's Assistant

·        The incumbent must be a nurse practitioner who is licensed to practice in Massachusetts as a NP OR a licensed PA.
