Cape Cod Healthcare is the leading provider of healthcare services for residents and visitors of Cape Cod.  With more than 450 physicians, 4,700 employees, and 1,100 volunteers, Cape Cod Healthcare operates two-acute care hospitals, the Cape's leading provider of homecare and hospice services (VNA), a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility (JML Care Center), an assisted living facility (Heritage at Falmouth), the Cape's only local laboratory service (CCHC Laboratory Services) and numerous health programs.  We are currently seeking a dedicated Facility Manager to join our team at Cape Cod Hospital.

To plan, organize, direct and control the facilities management functions of the hospital, including but not limited to, general construction, alterations, operations, maintenance and loss prevention management function including, but not limited to, Safety and Fire Prevention/Protection.  To work cooperatively and communicate politely with Executive Director and Department Heads, Employees, patients, visitors and other personnel.



1.      Establish goals, objectives, standards of performance, develop and implement operating policies and procedures; interpret policies, standards, regulations and codes to hospital personnel. 

2.      Plan, organize, direct and supervise the functions and activities of facilities management and engineering and loss prevention management.  Coordinate functions and activities to achieve objectives and comply with regulatory requirements.  Keep administration informed of activities, needs and problems.

3.      Direct and maintain plant engineering capability of the hospital.  Develop systems for control and efficient and effective utilization of all utilities such as gas, water, and power.  Confer with utility companies, city and state inspectors, and insurance companies regarding functional activities.  Participate in insurance inspections and claims.

4.      Develop and establish preventive maintenance program.  Schedule and prioritize repair and maintenance work and projects to minimize disruption of hospital operations.  Provide guidance for development and implementation of hospital equipment inventory control program that will meet requirements of regulatory, accreditation, and licensing agencies to insure a safe and secure environment.

5.      Assist quality assurance and risk management personnel.  Take immediate action to correct deficiencies and stop any unsafe activity that will cause personnel injury and/or property damage.  Escort state, OSHA, and insurance carrier safety engineers on hospital inspections.

6.      Plan for major repairs, renovations, and new construction.  Investigate needs for major repairs in collaboration with administration and department heads.  Periodically inspect buildings, grounds, and power plant, evaluate condition and needs and take or recommend corrective measures.  Work with administration and department heads in developing new or revised hospital areas.

7.      Make recommendations on major repair and construction projects as to work to be done by outside contractors or by hospital personnel.  Solicit bids from contractors, analyze quotes, make recommendations for acceptance, and serve as professional liaison between hospital and contractor during construction cycle.  Determine proper specifications best suited to hospital needs for renovations done by department personnel.  Administer   construction contracts and monitor construction in progress to insure compliance with plans and specifications.  Coordinate activities with local and state jurisdictions in obtaining certificates for occupancy.

8.      Interpret requirements and regulations of accrediting and regulatory agencies and national, state and local electrical, building, and plumbing codes to department staff.  Update practices, policies, and procedures as needed to remain in compliance.  Review department practices, quality of work performed, production schedules, and effect changes as needed to improve services.  Regularly inspect buildings and grounds to assure conformance with established standards and regulations.

9.      Consult with administration and fiscal services concerning department budget, major purchase priorities, major construction projects, renovation, and similar projects requiring large capital expenditures.  Prepare annual capital and expense budgets and ensure the department operates within allocated funds.  Monitor hospital annual capital equipment budget in conjunction with administrative and fiscal services for disposal and disposition of equipment replacements.  Assist in the   development of annual facilities project list.

10.  Evaluate equipment acquisitions included in annual capital equipment program prior to procurement by purchasing department.  Maintain appropriate records and statistics for administrative and regulatory purposes and supervise maintenance of complete and accurate records of time charges.  Implement cost-effective measures in department operation.

11.  Organize department structure and establish staffing needs.   Establish standards of performance and productivity.  Orient/train, assign, schedule, direct and supervise department staff through subordinates. Review personnel performance evaluations and initiate personnel actions such as merit increases, promotions, transfers, disciplinary action, terminations.  Investigate irregularities and policy violations and take corrective action.  Review, evaluate, and monitor work schedules, workflow, work hours, and duty assignments of personnel, and effect changes as needed.  Develop and maintain job descriptions for department personnel.

12.  Provide in-service and continuing education for staff.  Promote and encourage professional growth and development of personnel through attendance at in-services, workshops, seminars, etc.  Review accident reports and take appropriate action.  Administer labor agreement, and settle grievances.

13.  Evaluate and justify department needs and purchases.  May negotiate contracts, bring in outside trades and technical specialists, arrange for all purchasing of maintenance department supplies and equipment and perform related functions.  Maintain department records, reports, statistics and files as required.  Establish forms used, etc.  Prepare project reports and maintain historical data as required.  Keep current files of schematic, and engineering drawings of plant facilities and equipment, including specifications, operation and maintenance manuals.

14.  Study and evaluate new products, services, and technical equipment in order to assess their value in improving productivity in the department. Maintain an adequate reference library of manuals and texts accessible to department personnel.  Attend meetings as required.  Represent department at administrative meetings.  Participate on hospital committees as     requested and serve as in-house consultant to other departments.     Maintain professional growth and development to keep abreast of the field.  Maintain professional affiliations, attend outside conferences, seminars, etc. and confer with other plant services directors.

15.  Perform other work related duties as requested/directed.

·         Bachelor degree from an accredited school in civil, marine, mechanical, or electrical engineering or Certified Plant Engineer with ten or more years of previous experience in Hospital Facilities management and engineering.

·         Supervisory experience preferred

·         Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, local standards and codes, and requirements of regulatory and accreditation agencies; standard operating procedures for plant operation; budget development, control and direction; personnel management; work standards for skilled personnel; material and equipment suppliers.
